A few quick rules from our friends over at the USCG 
1.) The letters must be at least three (3) inches or taller even across multiple lines. of text 
2.) You must select a color that is opposite of your Hull color. In the case of a multicolor or patterned hull, a solid background should be used 
3.) Spacing should be at least 1 letter apart, not including the number 1 or a capital I. 
(Use a dash or two spaces to approximate if you are not sure about distance)
